Healthie is excited to be partnering with the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center at Colorado State University to help their team of dietitians provide excellent nutrition care.
We sat down to talk with Shelby Cox, MS, RDN, Associate Director at the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center, to learn more about the center, their approach to nutritional care and the ways technology has elevated their center’s level of care.
Healthie: Tell us about the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center and your approach to care?
Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center: The Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center’s mission is to provide training for students in the department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, while enhancing the health of the community through nutrition outreach, collaboration, and research. We provide motivational nutrition counseling, lifestyle coaching, cooking classes, and personalized diet, shopping, meal planning and wellness tips. In addition to our individual services for our community, we offer a variety of group programs, like the Diabetes Prevention Program, weight management and mindful eating programs. Most of our clients come to us for weight management counseling, heart disease and diabetes management, sports nutrition, and some eating disorder management as well.
H: What are your favorite aspects of your jobs?
KRNC: Our team of dietitians really enjoy the different offerings at the Center and the variety within our clientele. In one day we can see five patients with totally different reasons for nutrition counseling. One minute we may be hosting a cooking demonstration and the next, counseling clients or hosting a group session. Each day, things are always changing!
H: How do you think technology is changing the way dietitians are practicing?
KRNC: Technology is changing everything we do because we now have an opportunity to interact with clients and other members of the healthcare team in real-time.
The quality of care has also changed. With the implementation of technology, we are able to safely manage clients’ information and easily follow up with each individual. Technology allows us to do a lot more in this field than we could have ever imagined; I don’t know what we do without it!
We are creating more meaningful and impactful relationships with our clients by running our business much more efficiently [with Healthie]!
H: How is the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center using Healthie in your practices?
KRNC: The Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center is fully integrated with the Healthie platform! We utilize the billing features, scheduling, website integration, and the mobile app to boost client engagement. Everything we need to manage our practice is kept in one place and our interactions are practically seamless.
Our clients and team of dietitians love the photo food logging because it’s an intuitive approach to care. It’s very simple for clients to self-monitor, and rather than counting calories, the photo food log allows our clients to monitor hunger and fullness, further developing the sense of intuitive eating — one of our major missions at the Center and our approach to care.
H: Why are you excited about using Healthie?
KRNC: We have noticed an increase in accountability with the use of Healthie and have gotten great feedback from our clients. There wasn’t much of a barrier for our clients to overcome because people are using their phones and computers for everything nowadays. Our clients know it makes sense to have easy access their own nutritional information and interact in real-time with their dietitian! Our dietitians also really love how the platform is extremely customizable to each individual client so that their own needs can be met.
H: What’s one piece of advice you wish you knew as a nutrition student or dietetic intern?
KRNC: I really wish I understood more about how quickly the world of nutrition and nutrition practice is constantly changing. Day in and day out, new information is always emerging. At school, I would have loved more exposure to the new research and information coming out. As an intern, it would have opened eyes as to how much there really is to learn about nutrition. Even when your formal education is over, we are lifelong learners. The ever-changing environment we are immersed in can be scary at times, but also really interesting and exciting!
We’re so excited to have the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center at Colorado State University in the Healthie community!
