Tell us about your path to becoming a dietitian!
I’ve always been in love with the field of health and nutrition. At the age of 17, I worked at a health food store and then moved on to work for a nutritional supplement company as the office manager for 14 years. I really wanted to help people on a deeper level and decided to embark on the journey of becoming a Licensed and Registered Dietitian. After working at a hospital as an outpatient dietitian and also as a clinical dietitian at skilled nursing facilities, I finally took the leap of faith to go into private practice. I couldn’t be happier and now feel like I am living out my true calling!
Tell us all about your practice! What is your approach to care?
In my private practice, my approach to patient care is first and foremost to provide them with the most up to date evidence based information available. There is a lot of misinformation out there and I want my patients to know that they can trust me with the information they receive. Secondly, I want them to have fun! I want my patients to leave smiling and excited about making lasting, healthy changes in their lives. My approach is not just about nutrition, I am also a certified life coach and help them to break old behaviors and habits and form healthy, new goals in every area of their lives.
Can you tell us a little bit about how massage therapy is integrated into your practice?
As a licensed massage therapist, I am also able to provide therapeutic services for patients with issues such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, back and neck injuries, and muscle tension. Patients who deal with stress on a day to day basis also find relief with massage therapy. A person can change their whole way of eating, can exercise and be in shape physically but if they are stressed out, this still can play a role in the manifestation of a disease. Being able to provide massage therapy to my patients is another way that I can help to bring them into balance and homeostasis.
What advice do you have for dietetic students just graduating/completing their internships?
Advice to dietetic students and to interns, don’t be afraid to try out different areas of nutrition. In school, I knew that I wanted to be in private practice eventually but because I took a position right out of school to do independent contracting work as a clinical dietitian at skilled nursing facilities and long-term facilities, I discovered a love there also! As a licensed and registered dietitian, the sky is the limit with all of the different opportunities available to you! I would also recommend joining the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and your local dietetic chapter so that you can meet and network with local dietitians. This is a great opportunity to find positions available in your community and to also to get the latest up to date information in our field!
How do you think technology is changing the way dietitians are practicing care?
Technology is allowing us to be able to reach out to more people, not only in our community but around the world through tele-counseling sessions, blogging, Linked-In, Facebook. We really have everything right at our fingertips and that is really exciting! As licensed and registered dietitians, we are able to reach and help that may more people!
Why are you excited about using Healthie?
I am really excited about using Healthie because it will allow me to streamline my processes. Prior to Healthier, most of my charting was done with paper charts and now I am able to chart while I am seeing the patient, this allows me more time in the day to be able to help more people! I love some of the bonus features of the program as well such as being able to fax and do telehealth counseling. Finding Healthie has been a blessing and I am so happy to be a part of the Healthie family!
